Silent Stories 2010 - Glass Casts of patients, from the medical treatment procedure for head and neck cancer.

Silent Stories are a series of glass busts, created from the plaster casts used to make the clear shells worn by patients during Radiotherapy. The shells are used to direct the position of the laser beam and shield the rest of the face. This traditional casting technique, which creates a Classical portrait bust of the patient, has now been superseded by mesh moulds in hospitals.

The fragility of the glass is emotive of the patient’s state of mind in venerable

and frightening circumstances. The glass creates the impression of suspended time, a snapshot memory of the moment. The rough casts reflect the quality of the original plaster casts, which are designed as only a platform for making the final shell.

The patients donated their plaster casts for this project.
