PIA MATER
Pia Mater was commissioned for Spectacular Bodies: A History of Anatomical Art from Leonardo to Now at the Hayward Gallery, London (2000). 24 vertebrae and a ‘brain’ in blown glass are suspended 6-metres down the Hayward Gallery stairwell, linking the body section of the exhibition to the mind section on the top floor. Fibre-optic lights illuminate the glass to create shadows on the wall behind. With the gentle movement of the spine, the shadows seem to breath and bring the sculpture to life.
Pia Mater means ‘tender mother’ and is one of the membranes that surround the spinal column.
