DYSLEXIA WORK
Childes Play 2001
A body of work I made for Head On at the Science Gallery, London (2002), sponsored by the Wellcome Trust. In 2001 I underwent an FMRI and MRI scan as part of research into dyslexia with Dr Piers Cornelissen of Newcastle University and Dr Peter Hanson of Oxford University in 2001. The research was focused on investigating what variances dyslexia can cause in the section of the brain which processes words.
The resulting work fell into three categories: the words associated with dyslexia; IQ tests; my physical dyslexic self (such as Chromosome Puzzle and Self Portrait).

The eight coloured cubes spell the work ‘dyslexia’ and are a play on children’s building blocks. The children who play with them are usually too young to understand the symbols, and will be too old to play with them once they do. The repeated etched wording on the flooring, “this shouldn’t be difficult”, is the whisper that follows dyslexic children by well-meaning teachers or parents not understanding the frustrations dyslexic children feel.
